A common question asked for those making jewellery is where can you buy loose lava beads. There are very few places to buy lava beads in Malaysia, namely at some jewellery or craft shops, but the selections are minimal.

You can only find them in one or two sizes most of the time as these places usually sell ready-made jewellery with lava beads.

We have been creating lava bead bracelets and necklaces for a few years now, and we have tried to source them locally but with little luck.

At Green Daun, we carry many sizes and shapes of lava beads but no longer carry the coloured lava beads due to the colour fading.

Original lava beads are black in colour, and to get coloured lava beads, you need to bleach them before chemically dying them to the desired colours.

What are Lava Beads?

Lava stones are actually volcanic rocks and are one of the oldest and most frequently found stones globally, which almost all cultures worldwide have used.

History has also mentioned the Native Americans using these stones and beads before going to war. It is also fairly new in its application as a decorating material or jewellery, gaining popularity in the past decade.

Lava beads are formed from the lava rock, which is actually made up of basalt, an igneous rock formed during a volcanic eruption.

The porous nature of the lava beads means that they have many holes and bubbles, making them very lightweight hence very comfortable to wear.

This also makes them ideal for jewellery making as they can be easily threaded. Their irregular surfaces are characteristic of the lava bead, making each bead unique.

Lava Beads have a rough texture, which can be quite abrasive; therefore, the beads sold for jewellery making purposes are treated with paraffin wax to make them smooth.

The paraffin coating also gives the lava beads a dark colouring, while the overall bead also works as a diffuser.

Lava Bead Properties

Lava beads are believed to promote strength and fertility; in other words, it is a grounding stone that strengthens one’s connection to Mother Earth.

Because of its grounding qualities, the lava bead is great for calming emotions. For Spirituality, Lava beads are fantastic for stabilizing and grounding the root chakra. This is because of the strong connection to the earth and its creation within the centre of Earth.

Typically, lava beads are recommended to be worn in close contact with the skin, if not directly on the skin, as it gives easy access for the energy to flow clearly. Some of the best ways to use this are jewellery like lava bracelets, necklaces or even earrings.

Essential Oil Diffuser Lava Bracelets

One of the new jewellery designs and trends in the market is the essential oil diffuser jewellery in Malaysia, where lava beads are used as the main diffuser.

This is replaced by the cheap sponge balls that usually come with pendants. According to many users, the sponge tends to dry up faster; hence the lava is much better for this.

You can drop your essential oils onto the lava bead, where the scents can last a good two to three hours. Some unique, essential oil scents can even last for a few days, as we have tested this.

Faux Lava Beads
Here is what fake lava beads look like.

Please note that when you see someone selling lava diffuser jewellery and using light-coloured lava stones, they are fake lava or artificial lava balls.

The problem is that many people do not have proper knowledge of what they sell. Just because China mentions that the coloured ones are real lava, everyone believes it.

People want to sell, and no research is done, which is really sad. So when you see a light pastel blue, pink or beige lava stone, it is 100% fake. Do not be easily fooled by this.

Wholesale Lava Beads in Malaysia

At one time, we used to do wholesale for lava beads in Malaysia, but as of January 2018, we no longer provide wholesale. We sell the beads individually, and you can buy as little as one bead.

The reason for this is that some sizes are hard to obtain from reputable suppliers. Hence we rather not take the risk by selling wholesale.
